How To Dragon Braid Your Own Hair For Beginners

A dragon braid also known as a pull-through braid is a fun and easy-to-learn hairstyle that creates a braid-like effect but without actually braiding the hair.
Instead, sections of hair are pulled through each other to create a faux-braided look.
This style works well for all hair types and can be done quickly, making it a great choice for both casual and more formal looks.

Can you do a pull through braid in short hair?

Yes, you can absolutely do a pull-through braid on short hair! While the result may not be as long or voluminous as on longer hair, you can still create a cute, textured look by adapting the technique. Here are a few tips for doing a pull-through braid on short hair:

Tips for Pull-Through Braid on Short Hair:

  1. Use Smaller Sections: Since your hair is shorter, use smaller sections when pulling the hair through. This will help create a more defined look and ensure the braid stays in place.
  2. Secure with Pins or Small Elastics: If you find your sections don’t stay in place, use bobby pins or small elastics to keep the sections neat as you pull them through.
  3. Texturize: Add some texture spray or light curls to your hair before starting. This will give the pull-through braid more grip and volume, especially on shorter hair.

How To Dragon braid step by step

Time requirement: 10-15 minutes
Skill level: Medium

What You’ll Need:

  • Hairbrush or comb to detangle your hair
  • Elastic hair ties (small ones, preferably clear or matching your hair color)
  • Optional: Hairspray or texturizing spray for extra grip

Prep Your Hair:

Start with clean, dry hair. Brush or comb through to remove any tangles. You can add a bit of texturizing spray to give your hair more grip and hold.

Step-by-step guide

  1. Create a High Ponytail: Gather all of your hair into a high ponytail (you can also do a low ponytail or a side for a different look). Secure it with an elastic band at the crown of your head or wherever you prefer.
  2. Divide the Ponytail into Two Sections: Once your ponytail is secured, divide the hair into two equal sections (a top and bottom section).
  3. Create the First “loop”: Take the top section and split it in half, creating a gap in the middle. Then take the bottom section and pull it up through the gap you created in the top section and clip the hair away with a hair clip. Now the 2 strands from the top section is hanging down by themselves. Take an elastic and secure them together. Take down the hair you clipped away.
  4. Repeat the Process: Now, repeat the same step: take the top section and split it in half, creating a new gap. Pull the bottom section of hair through the gap and clip the hair away. Again, secure the 2 halves having down together with an elastic.
  5. Loosen and Fluff: Gently tug on the sides of the loops to loosen the hair and create a fuller, more voluminous look. You can either do this step every time you have created a loop, or at the end.
  6. Secure the End: Once you reach the end, take the 2 ends, pinch them together into one, and secure them with an elastic.
